Radiology
Lourdes provides a full range of radiology services at both Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County.
At each location, patients may obtain services in:
- Plain X-rays
- Ultrasound
- CT scans
- MRI
Recently, the Lourdes Health System installed a new Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) that greatly reduces the turnaround time for all radiology studies. PACS is essentially a digital radiology system that allows referring physicians to view high-quality studies and reports from their office or home computers. Instead of receiving films to take to one's referring physician, patients now receive their images and reports on a CD. The program to run the CD is included, so a referring physician does not require any special software.
In addition, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center is home to the region's first 64-Slice CT Scanner. Mammography services are offered at the Women's Center, Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County.

64-Slice CT Scanner
Lourdes's new 64-slice CT scanner offers image quality and speed that far surpass the capabilities of four-, eight- and 16-slice scanners still in use in the Philadelphia area. These two superiorities make the new scanner a valuable tool for diagnosing heart disease, pulmonary and neurological problems, cancer and other serious illnesses.Imagine being able to obtain sharp, detailed images of the heart in just seconds. Now imagine being able to diagnose coronary artery disease and other serious illnesses with a single, noninvasive scan.
Thanks to new scanning technology at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center,
images of unprecedented quality can now be seen of the heart, brain and
lungs, taking noninvasive diagnostics to a whole new level.
Lourdes's new SOMATOM Sensation 64-slice CT scanner enables physicians to scan an entire patient from head to toe in less than 30 seconds. The technology, available at only a handful of hospitals throughout the nation, provides extremely sharp, clear, three-dimensional images of organs and blood vessels. Images can be rotated to obtain 360-degree views. For many patients, these capabilities permit earlier detection of illnesses without invasive surgery. This, in turn, can mean timelier treatment and, often, better outcomes.
The scanner has the potential to identify life-threatening blockages in coronary arteries long before any other noninvasive technology. This enables doctors to begin treatment with medications and help the patient make behavioral and lifestyle changes earlier, before significant damage has occurred.
The scanner is also useful in diagnosing neurological diseases and identifying tumors. For gastroenterology studies, it offers virtual colonoscopies for the detection of colon polyps and early colon cancer. It can also be used to chart the progress of chemotherapy inside the smallest blood vessels.
The new technology is ideal for pediatric cases, because scans can often be completed with a single breath hold. It is also preferable for adults who experience anxiety in confined spaces.
If you are interested in undergoing a 64-slice CT examination for early diagnosis, please contact your family physician. If your doctor feels it is warranted, you will be able to undergo the CT exam.
