Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine uses the low-level radioactivity emitted by safe, medical isotopes to reveal images of the body and to show abnormalities. Once circulated in the body, these radionuclides accumulate in certain tissues and organs, giving off gamma waves that a special camera can detect to create a picture. This important subspecialty of radiology can add vital information to the imaging of a wide variety of body areas, can demonstrate the status of various body functions and can pinpoint problems in tissue or anatomy.

Lourdes offers a wide set of services in this area, bringing patients a range of diagnostics using the latest equipment. In particular, the program at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, in Camden, serves as a diagnostic center for the Lourdes cardiac program, offering all forms of stress testing. This includes gated single-photon-emission CT (SPECT) imaging to determine cardiac function (ejection fraction) and heart-wall motion.

Nuclear medicine uses radiolabeled substances (radiopharmaceuticals) to diagnose image organ function and to identify abnormal tissue.
Additionally, in its role as part of Lourdes' Regional Organ Transplantation Center and regional dialysis center, the nuciear medicine service at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center provides an array of kidney exams and transplant-function studies. Nuclear medicine at the Lourdes Burlington site performs a multitude of thyroid exams and performs thyroid therapies for hyperthyroidism (gland ablation treatments), as well as whole body I-131 imaging as a follow-up for patients who have been treated for thyroid cancer.

Lourdes' nuclear medicine service offers these studies:

  • Liver/Spleen Scan
  • Lung Vent & Perf Scan
  • Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Scan
  • Gastric Emptying Scan

The radio markers used in these tests remain active only briefly in the body. The radioactivity from the radiotracer is almost complete eliminated in 24 to 48 hours.

The American College of Radiology has accredited the nuclear medicine services at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden.
