Each year, 3 to 5 million Americans experience chronic wounds caused by diabetes, poor circulation, long-term immobilization, or other conditions. If you have a chronic, non-healing wound the expert staff at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County may be able to help.

The Wound Healing Center at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County is an outpatient clinic for treating hard-to-heal wounds. The staff is comprised of physicians and nurses who have advanced education in wound management Our goal is to provide comprehensive and individualized treatment to each patient care for at the center.

The Center, which treats about 3,000 patients annually, employs the latest techniques like lasers and skin grafts to treat ulcers, edema and lesions, such as those on the feet and legs that have not shown significant healing in four weeks, or have not completely healed in eight weeks. Eighty-two percent of all wounds treated at the center are healed within a few months. Treatment provided at the center healed wounds that may have resulted in amputation of feet and legs with other treatment options.

Who Should Come to the Center

People with wounds that have not shown improvement in four weeks or not healed in eight weeks are those who benefit the most from the advanced healing technologies used at the center.

The center uses cutting-edge technology to treat various lesions and ulcers. For example, one of the center's vascular surgeons, Samuel H. Wasser, MD, FACS, was the first vascular surgeon in South Jersey to use EVLT, which uses a laser to correct varicose veins instead of vein stripping. The center also uses Apligraf, a living bi-layered skin substitute grown in the lab, and a vacuum device to help close wounds.

Specially-trained staff are on call 24-hours a day and are available to address anyone who is suffering from or suspects a stroke. Lourdes' integrated approach to evaluating and treating stroke, investigating new treatments for stroke, and preventing additional strokes allows patients to receive the most advanced methodologies for treatment of their conditions.

Treatment Plan

After an initial evaluation, our physicians and nurses who are specialists in wound treatment will develop a unique treatment plan for you. Your plan will include regular visits to the Center for treatment and evaluation. You will also be given detailed home care instructions.

Education and Prevention

Once a treatment plan is determined, the patient and their caregivers are taught how to care for the wounds. They are shown how to apply dressings and devices that may be ordered as part of the treatment of their wounds. Instructions on how to prevent future wounds are also provided. Diabetes education and counseling are provided when needed.

Many patients experience healing of their chronic wounds in just a few months.

The Center accepts most insurance plans. The Center's receptionist can answer most questions regarding insurance and any referrals needed for an appointment.

The Wound Healing Center is located in the East Building, on Hospital Drive, directly across from the emergency room entrance to Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County.

The Lourdes Wound Healing Center is located on the first floor of the East Building, across from the Emergency entrance of Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro. The center has ample free parking. It is within short drive of the New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 295, Route 130 and Burlington-Bristol Bridge.
